Americans love seafood! In fact, the average American eats around 16 pounds of fish and shellfish per year, and approximately 3 billion people worldwide rely on seafood as their primary source of protein. Here are the top 4 most popular seafood varieties in the country:

1. Shrimp

Coming in at number one is shrimp. It is the most popular seafood in America, and that’s for many reasons!

Shrimp is a great option for diets because it is high in protein but low in fat. It’s also full of Vitamin B12, calcium, iodine, phosphorus, selenium, and Omega 3s.

1.27 billion pounds of shrimp is consumed in America every single year, which equals about 4.1 pounds of shrimp per person.

2. Salmon

Salmon, coming in at number two, is tasty and healthy! it is full of omega-3 fatty acid, protein, and vitamin-D.

918 million salmon are consumed every year.

3. Tuna

Tuna comes in at 3rd place. It’s particularly popular in sandwiches, but fresh tuna is most commonly used in sushi.

Americans eat 701 million pounds of tuna every year, and it is full of nutritional value like protein and omega-3 acids.

4. Pollock

Our fourth and final variety is Alaskan Pollock.

Pollock shares a lot of the same nutritional value and health benefits as some of the other most consumed fish, and it can be great for a person on a diet. It’s versatility also makes it easy to prepare and enjoy!
