How to Crack Crab Legs

If you recently purchased wild Alaskan crab, then it’s time to get cracking! See our favorite easy crab cracking tips & tricks below, so that you can ensure your next crab boil goes over in the best way!

What You'll Need:

  • Large Stock Pot with the Lid
  • Kitchen Shears
  • A Dish Towel

The Process:

  1. Begin by steaming your crab. Add it to a pot of boiling water (about 1/4 inch deep), cover and steam for about 8-10 minutes, or until hot to the touch (dungeness crab only takes about 6-8 minutes).
  2. Crack the leg at the joint. If you need to, protect your hands by using a dish towel. Twist the crab leg at the joint, and then pull out the tendon.
  3. Use kitchen shears to cut through the shells, then pull apart and remove the meat.
