Do you know why Vitamin D is so important? Vitamin D is an essential nutrient, providing multiple health benefits. In fact, Vitamin D works alongside calcium to strengthen bones and enamel. Vitamin D and calcium have also been shown to reduce the risk of high blood pressure during pregnancy and preterm birth. But what about Vitamin D and immunity? According to the British Medical Journal, a lack of Vitamin D has been associated with increased susceptibility to infection. In other words, Vitamin D can help protect people against a host of infectious agents, including bacteria and viruses.

Seafood & Vitamin D

It’s winter, and the sun is hiding! If you’re struggling to get enough Vitamin D during the winter months, then you need to be eating more seafood! What many people don’t know is that seafood is a rare natural source of Vitamin D. Though some foods have been “fortified” with vitamin D (meaning the Vitamin D is added during processing), some seafood — like salmon —has natural levels of vitamin D that may be higher than fortified foods. According to the 2020 Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee, nearly 94 percent of Americans aren’t getting enough Vitamin D — and that needs to change.

Main Points

Vitamin D
1. plays a very important part in the innate antimicrobial (an agent that kills microorganisms) response which helps the immune system to function at full capacity.
2. Good sources of vitamin D include salmon, tuna, sardines, and herring.
